Manhattan Beach - Concert Band
Item number 8898952CC, $55.00

We are proud to present this Frederick Fennell edition of Sousa's "Manhattan Beach" march. Premiered in 1893, this march features the classic Sousa style, and with the masterful editing you'll find with this edition, your band will soon find itself sounding like the original Sousa Band!

Estimated Performance Time: 1:45

Technical Notes: John Philip Sousa was constantly torn between the pressures of his very public life and the endless joys it also generated; and it is not generally known that Sousa paid all the bills for the operation of a very large body of musicians. No subsidies here, no local women's committee, no arts council grants, no university activity fee, no contributions from business or industry. He had to earn his way, moving from place to place, and one of the lucrative annual summer contracts that supported his band was the one he held for a number of years at the Manhattan Beach resort.

In its late 19th century hey-day, New Yorkers flocked to Manhattan Beach, a well-known summer resort by the sea, to enjoy the many pleasant diversions to be found in such places. And foremost among their musical attractions was The Sousa Band. Sousa played there from the earliest days of his tours with his own group.

When Sousa was leader of the Marine Band (he resigned in 1892) he had begun the practice at important engagements of leaving behind a token of his highest esteem - a march commemorating the occasion. This march was from The Sousa Band's July-August visit to Manhattan Beach in 1893. The park is long gone, but the spirit of what must have been quite a place lives on in this really marvellous, almost frugal essay in the march form.

The E Flat contra-alto clarinet part is actually labeled "E Flat Contrabass Clarinet".
