Technical Notes: The oboe, French horn and bells parts are optional. The 1st percussion part is marked for suspended cymbal, snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for triangle and crash cymbal.

Teaching aids for the director:

Its simplicity is indeed its charm and each new version generates new variations of the opening four bar "ground bass." Originally, Pachelbel wrote numerous melodic variations over this ground bass - some of them, complete or modified are included in this arrangement, which is specifically designed for younger players.

All players should be encouraged to listen carefully how each phrase serves not only a linear melodic function, but also fits carefully into the total ensemble. This arrangement, like many others, starts simply and continues to add parts until the entire band is playing (measure 25), with each major section of the band in different contrapuntal parts.

For contrast, the woodwinds are featured at measure 29 and the brass at measure 33. The final section is marked at measure 76 to create a dramatic and stately ending. This piece also offers a great opportunity to teach a legato, sustained style which is so very important in attaining a rich, band sonority. Constant attention to length of note values, breath support, and tone quality will hopefully achieve this musical goal.
