Lament And Tribal Dances - Concert Band

"Lament And Tribal Dances" is a rewarding and satisfying work from one of today's best composers for young bands. Starting in 4/4, changing to 3/4, and returning to 4/4, this exciting piece features a variety of styles and key signatures, all of which help maintain student and audience interest.

Estimated Performance Time: 5:40

Technical Notes: Commissioned by the Iowa Bandmasters Association, this dynamic new work from Michael Sweeney is written in three contrasting sections. The opening "Lament" features a plaintive F Horn melody and expansive harmonies. The mood then shifts to an intensely rhythmic dance using an unusual modal scale. In the final section, the flutes switch to recorders and a driving percussion ostinato figure helps propel this magnificent piece to a dramatic ending.

The percussion 1 part is written for medium tom, concert bass drum, wood block, and concert snare drum. The percussion 2 part is written for rain stick, medium tom, shaker, suspended cymbal, gong, and tambourine. The mallet percussion part is written for vibes, mark tree, and marimba. The timpani part is written for 3 drums tuned to E, A, and D. The timpani tuning changes after measure 24 (A to B and D to E). The timpani part also includes parts for finger cymbals and a medium tom.

The Centurions
The Centurions - Concert Band
Item number 8897724CC, $42.00

In the days of the Roman Empire, a Centurion was a commissioned officer who held the rank of Captain and was in charge of a century (one hundred soldiers). These Centurions were very effective and important leaders in the Roman military. Generally there were sixty or so centuries in a legion, which was commanded by a general.

"The Centurions" portrays, in music, the marching and maneuvers of the centuries as they march in a long parade of review, with their Centurion in the lead, before the Roman political leaders, thousands of military leaders, and citizens of the Roman Empire.
