Ancient Castle
"Ancient Castle" is a set of variations which is based on a beautiful old Japanese folk song. Written by the talented James Curnow, we're sure you'll enjoy this superb concert piece. Estimated Performance Time: 4:00 Technical Notes: Note To The Conductor: This piece presents a wonderful opportunity to work with other classes in a cross-cultural setting. This is one of those beautiful Japanese melodies that seems, at times, to call out to the composer to be treated with great repect. Its melodic contours and expressive qualities must be handled with care. This set of variations seeks to do justice to the melody through brief, subtle transformations. At this stage of learning, it will take close attention to these subtleties, in order to avoid over-playing the music. Perhaps listening to recordings of Japanese music (particularly folk music) would be appropriate prior to beginning rehearsals on this piece. Variations are as follows: Theme: measures 1-19. Variation 1: measures 16-35, features the playing of the melody by various families of instruments. Variation 2: measures 36-60, adds a percussion ostinato (an incessant repetition of a melodic or rhythmic theme) also played by low woodwinds and brass, combined with a new melody extracted from the original folk song. Variation 3 and finale: recaps the theme with a number of subtle harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic changes. Tempo changes and dynamic contrasts have been carefully indicated, and they will add a great deal of expression to the composition if they are handled with care. Nothing in the score calls for heavily accented or extrememly loud playing. Even the fortissimo dynamics need to be treated carefully. Young musicians can play musically when directed and taught how to do so. This piece presents the perfect setting in which to play "expressivo" (expressively). Composer(s): This piece was composed by James Curnow. Publisher: This piece was published by Curnow Music Press. Series: This piece is part of the series "Curnow Esprit Series".
