Legends In The Mist Legends In The Mist (Full Score) Item number 8898283CC, $7.50 Legends In The Mist - Concert Band Item number 8898285CC, $60.00 "Legends In The Mist" is a compelling, evocative piece based on Native American folk lore. "Legends in the Mist" is Michael Sweeney's most intriguing work to date, with a blend of inventive melodies, biting rhythms, cutting brass, exotic percussion, and special effects. Technical Notes: The Finger Lakes area in New York state is rich with Native American legends dating back hundreds of years. One particular legend involves the booming drum-like sounds that are heard coming from Seneca Lake. These are claimed by some to be the sounds of ancient war drums or angry spirits. Although not meant to be descriptive of any specific tale, this composition is suggestive of the mysteries and moods surrounding these early legends. Composed in three main sections, this piece opens with a subdued feeling using unusual percussion effects and gradually developing themes. The second section is characterized by a faster tempo dominated by driving percussion patterns, very active rhythms and meters, and a sense of intense agitation and "anger". As this section develops, a feeling of calm and resolve begins to emerge leading to the final main section and emotional climax starting at measure 108. If a "Rain Stick" is not available, maracas may be substituted using a swirling motion. This composition was originally written to include the use of a medium steel drum, however, three differently pitched brake drums may be used instead. In the absence of either a steel drum or brake drums, use a marimba with rubber mallets on these pitches: D, F, and Ab. These are also the preferred pitches if a steel drum is used.
