They're Off

Item number 8895244CC, $50.00

"They're Off" is one of those classic band pieces that is worth performing, but might take you more work to actually pull off a great performance. This set of parts is a reprint of the original 1918 publication. It has a few quirks we don't see in more modern band arrangements. With a few hours using your favorite notation software, or a sharp pencil and a pad of manuscript paper, you can make this music work with any modern band. The quirks are part of the music, though, and you'll need to work with them.

Product Format: Concert Band

Technical Notes: There is no conductor score - the publisher suggests using a solo cornet part for a guide; the tuba parts are for E Flat tubas (most good tuba players have learned the alternate fingerings to make E Flat parts work on their C tubas, but some players don't know how to use E Flat parts); There are no F horn parts - the set comes with E Flat horn/alto horn parts (once again - the best horn players can transpose E Flat parts on the fly, but many horn players don't have that skill); the trombone parts are for B Flat trombone (both treble and bass clef versions are provided).

Composer(s): This piece was composed by Fred Jewell.

Publisher: This piece was published by C.L. Barnhouse Company.

Believe it or not, this Benny Goodman classic has never been available for standard big band instrumentation. The original contains solo clarinet and less than a full complement of brass. Arranger Mike Lewis has adapted this classic tune for 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a rhythm section. There is nothing new here, but now it is available for all standard big bands. This will be a welcome addition to any jazz library.
