Their goal was to begin new lives in what is now the western United States. Many emigrants traveled in wagons that carried their worldly goods along with supplies needed to survive the trip. These wagons were known as "prairie schooners" because of their distinctive shape and the fact that they provided an alternative to traveling by sea-going vessels.
