Simple Gifts
"Simple Gifts" is an American folk song steeped in tradition. It has been used by many composers in many different settings including the symphonic setting used by Aaron Copland. This arrangement was created for very young concert band, and allows the flowing melody to dominate the listener's ears. Technical Notes: The bells part is labeled "mallet percussion" on the score. The 1st percussion part is marked for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for suspended cymbal. Notes To The Conductor: The theme of the song must dominate throughout the arrangement. The tempo suggested will help keep the melody flowing, although at first rehearsal may be necessary for young performers. You may wish to show the performers how the melody is structured in the arrangement first with the flute, oboe, and trumpet and then with the flute, oboe, and clarinet after four measures, and trace the melody throughout the entire arrangement in this manner. Feel free to change the dynamic markings to ensure good balance throughout. The repeat sign in measure 36 can be omitted if performer endurance wanes at this early stage of student instruction.
