Anglo-Saxons called the second day of the week "monandaeg," meaning "moon day" because it was a sacred day devoted to the moon goddess. Ancient observers believed that the dark regions were "seas," a term still used today. 19th and 20th century telescopes revealed the visible side of the moon but it wasn't until October, 1959, that photographs taken by the Soviet Lunik III showed us the far side of the moon. This Bart Howard song, "Fly To The Moon" is just one of the many songs that has paid tribute to the moon's mysteries for centuries. Your jazz ensemble players will enjoy this jazz classic.
