Mayflower Overture
The Mayflower brought the Pilgrims to North America in 1620. There were many trials and tribulations of the journey and this piece of music depicts that voyage quite well. "Mayflower Overture" is a great way to introduce your group to the work of Ron Nelson. Technical Notes: The 1st percussion part contains the cymbals, suspended cymbal, bass drum and snare drum parts. The 2nd percussion part contains the sleigh bells, thunder sheet, chimes and gong parts. The trill in measure 51 has the footnote, "Play whole or half trills ad. lib. If a particular trill is difficult, play an easier one near the given pitches." In measure 108 the flute, piccolo, oboe, B Flat clarinet 1, B Flat clarinet 2, B Flat clarinet 3 and glockenspiel have improved parts (variations on the pattern in measure 107). Players should not attempt to play this together. Brass players should be conducted at about 84. Measure 117 has the footnote, "Instruct improving players that the two eighth notes (beat 6) of bar 118 signal return to strict tempo at bar 119." Composer(s): This piece was composed by Ron Nelson.
