This piece begins in a slow, mysterious fashion, depicting the dark forest. An abrupt, dissonant introduction ushers in the second main section, which is filled with angular melodies and biting harmonies, representing the forest's struggle for survival. The concluding allegro vivace represents the ever-present birds and animals that always have, and always will, call this ancient forest their rightful home.
