Normandy Beach
This is the young band march you've been looking for! A great contest or concert selection, it is both effective and easy to play. "Normandy Beach" will be a great introduction for your band to British-style concert marches. Estimated Performance Time: 2:20 Technical Notes: The bells part is labeled as "mallets" in the score. The drums part is marked for snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals. Conductor Notes: The character of this march demands that the metronome marking be strictly observed. A stately "British" style and tempo is required so that clarity of line and rhythmic vitality is perserved. Although the musical idea of a gradually building dynamic level is implied, it is not accomplished with varying dynamics, but rather by increasing the instrumentation and adding to the texture. Therefore, each entering instrument is marked mezzo forte until measure 81, and each part should be played decisively but not loudly. The climax occurs on the note marked fortissimo in measure 92, and the march should build to this peak from the beginning. From measure 97 to measure 112 the reverse should be felt, while the closing four measures should be played forte with a solid, crisp "bump note" on the end. The accents in the snare drum part are vital to the rhythmic energy of the march and should be executed with conviction. Two snare drummers, if available, are suggested for the "all" in measure 24 and again at measure 112, with one player on the "solo" parts. Finally, all dotted eight-sixteenth figures, whether slurred or tongued, should be very precise rhythmically. Composer(s): This piece was composed by John Edmondson. Publisher: This piece was published by Hal Leonard Corporation. Series: This piece is part of the series "Hal Leonard Concert Band Series".
