Variations On An English Folk Song
Claude T. Smith's easy, effective set of variations is destined to become a classic grade III overture. This is easy festival programming at its best. Estimated Performance Time: 4:50 Technical Notes: The 1st percussion part is marked for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for crash cymbal, suspended cymbal, and tambourine. Notes To The Director A rubato style is important in the Andante Moderato section between measures 7 and 23. Establish a moderate march tempo at measure 48 and be sure it is played in a marcato style. At measure 90, give special attention to balancing the different voices of the canon and have the percussion play in the background. At measure 17 (and other similar places), the inner parts should be equal in volume to the melody voices. Moving lines and non-harmonic tones should be strong in the sections which begin at measures 23 and 90. A joyful sound should be created in the march section (measure 48). Composer(s): This piece was composed by Claude T. Smith. Publisher: This piece was published by Jenson Publications.
