Here is a hot new tune from the group Baha Men that was featured in the hit movie "Shrek". Arranged in this easy setting, "The Best Years Of Our Lives (Part I)" features an exciting Latin sound with melodies that really stick to you. You don't have to be an ugly green monster (with a big heart) to like this song!

Estimated Performance Time: 1:50

Technical Notes: Good balance is essential to a successful performance. Note that the melody is usually marked one dynamic level louder than the accompaniment. Be sure that the accompaniment (especially the percussion) never covers the melody. Don't hesitate to adjust dynamic markings in necessary to improve balance. (If the band has a large low brass section, their dynamic markings may have to be adjusted softer.)

The articulation markings in the melody are important to the style of the arrangement. Take care to rehearse them in detail. As a general rule, the melody should be articulated in a tenuto style, as if it were being sung.

The required percussion instruments are Hi-Hat, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, and Bongos (high and low). If bongos are not available, substitute two small tom-toms or two snare drums tuned high and low with snares turned off. The bell part is optional. If additional percussionists are available, the addition of other instruments such as Maracas, Claves, and Shaker would enhance the Latin flavor of the music.

Believe it or not, this Benny Goodman classic has never been available for standard big band instrumentation. The original contains solo clarinet and less than a full complement of brass. Arranger Mike Lewis has adapted this classic tune for 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a rhythm section. There is nothing new here, but now it is available for all standard big bands. This will be a welcome addition to any jazz library.
