Going back to the original manuscript, Mark Williams has crafted an outstanding version of this work for younger bands. Estimated Performance Time: 2:50 Technical Notes: The percussion part is marked for snare drum, bass drum, crash cymbals, tenor drum, and tambourine. William Byrd was the most renowned composer of the English Renaissance, and was granted a virtual monopoly by Queen Elizabeth on the printing and selling of music. This selection from his Fitzwilliam Virginal Book is familar to band audiences through its inclusion in Gordon Jacob's classic William Byrd Suite. Originally written in the style of Byrd, with his ambiguous use of the seventh scale degree, resulting in a free mixing of the major and mixolydian modes. This movement, also known as the "Marche Before the Battell", should be performed in a very stately, unhurried fashion.
