Slava! - Concert Band
Item number 8897351CC, $130.00

If you're looking for a good challenging piece for your band, you'll find it here. "Slava!" requires a large percussion section, whose parts are very important for this work. If you have a really good band looking for excellent concert music, this piece is is great to conduct, play, and listen to.

Estimated Performance Time: 3:30

Technical Notes: The first theme of "Slava!" is a vaudevillian razz-ma-tazz tune filled with side-sliping modulations and sliding trombones. Theme two, which prominently features the electric guitar, is a canonic tune in 7/8 time. A very brief kind of development section follows, after which the two themes recur in reverse order. Near the end they are combined with a quotation (proclaimed by the ubiquitous trombones) from the 'Coronation Scene' of Moussorgsky's "Boris Goudonov", where the chorus sings the Russian word "slava" meaning "glory". In this way, of course, the composer is paying an extra four-bar homage to his friend Slava Rostropovich, to whom this overture is fondly dedicated.

The trumpet and trombone solos in measures 37-44 and 173-180 should be played with wa-wa mutes in old vaudeville style. The solos in measures 17-22 should be played with growl effect (using plunger with short straight mute (pixy) or plunger alone - both with flutter-tongue on growl notes). If some of the sixteenth-note passages are difficult for certain players, divisi arrangements are suggested.

In measures 80-95 the melody should be played by two instruments, preferably electric guitar and soprano saxophone. In the absence of these instruments, English horn (or oboe) may be substituted for electric guitar and alto saxophone for soprano saxophone.

In measures 96-109 the 1st cornet part is preferably to be played in unison. However, for ease of execution, and optional divisi arrangement is provided. - Clare Grundman
