Incantation And Dance
"Incantation And Dance" (originally named "Nocturne And Dance") was John Barnes Chance's first piece composed for band. The "Incantation" section has a flute introduction and the "Dance" section has a percussion introduction. This piece gathers force as the entire ensemble draws together for an exciting and dramatic conclusion. "Incantation And Dance" remains one of Chance's most beloved and popular pieces. Estimated Performance Time: 7:30 Technical Notes: The percussion part is for bass drum, maracas, claves, gong, gourd, tambourine, temple blocks, timbales, whip, cymbals and bongos parts. The whip must be extremely loud and sound like a real whip, or else should be omitted. The contrabass clarinet part is duplicated throughout the string bass part provided (but not notated in the score). In measure 21 of the maracas part, where the trill is indicated, player should "stir" maracas in small circles, producing a steady hiss; the conventional shaking is indicated later by tremolo notation. Composer(s): This piece was composed by John Barnes Chance. Publisher: This piece was published by Boosey & Hawkes.
