Mars
Gustav Holst, born in Cheltenham, England in 1874, was a trombonist as well as one of England's most respected composers. "Mars" comes from his 1915 composition, "The Planets". This work consists of 7 different tone poems, each of which describes a planet. Mars is "the bringer of war" and its respective part of the suite, "Mars," was, ironically, composed just as World War I was beginning. "Mars" pounds out a driving 5/4 rhythm which symbolizes a war, but contains a very emotional melody. This is the perfect piece for any formal concert. Technical Notes: The drum part in this song also includes parts for gong and cymbal. Composer(s): This piece was composed by Gustav Holst. Publisher: This piece was published by Boosey & Hawkes. Series: This piece is part of the series "Boosey & Hawkes British Band Classics Series".
