New South Wales March - Concert Band
Item number 8897280CC, $45.95

"New South Wales March" begins with an original tune by the composer, and employs the popular Australian folk song, "Waltzing Matilda", as its trio strain. A superb arrangement of a classic tune by one of the best composers ever. Try it!

Estimated Performance Time: 2:20

Technical Notes: The Piccolo part is labeled "Piccolo (Optional)" in the score. The String Bass part is labeled "String Bass (Optional)" in the score.

Performance Suggestions: Note the metronome marking, and allow the players to hear it before beginning. It is a relaxed, lilting march tempo which should never vary or sound rushed. The introduction and first strain are marked "mezzo forte" throughout, and a general "marcato" style is in order.

The trio begins at measure 47 (after a four measure percussion introduction), using the familiar tune, "Waltzing Matilda". Take special care to keep the tempo steady, since the percussion is not playing and the dynamic is soft. Note that on the repeat certain instruments do not play, but that the flutes (and optional piccolo, if available) have an obbligato marked "mezzo forte". Exaggerate the dynamic contrasts in measure 64 between the woodwind and brass segments of this verse/interlude strain.

A touch of drama may be added to the final trio strain at measure 80 by adding a slight "ritardando" at measure 79. Note the countermelody in the low brass, and try to bring it out somewhat.

The limited ranges, simple rhythms and steady tempo will provide the young group the opportunity to stress the musical aspects of dynamic contrast and accurate articulation, both so important to this march style.

Composer(s): This piece was composed by John Edmondson.

Publisher: This piece was published by Boosey & Hawkes.
