American Folk Festival
You can't go wrong when you band plays an Anne McGinty piece, and "American Folk Festival" is no exception! Comprised of three distinct melodies (Billy Boy, This Old Man, and Skip To My Lou), this piece is a sure audience pleaser! Estimated Performance Time: 2:30 Technical Notes: This medley feature three well-known American folk songs: "Billy Boy", "This Old Man", and "Skip To My Lou". The beat remains constant throughout the piece. At the beginning the quarter note equals 100, at measure 41 there is a L'istesso (same) Tempo, and at measure 73 the half note in cut time equals 100. The four-bar introduction in the 2nd clarinet and alto saxophone continues as an accompaniment to the 1st clarinet melody. There are frequent independent entrances which will require accurate counting and solid attacks in each section. "Billy Boy" ends with a final statement of the introductory material. Do not allow the tempo to slow down before the 3/4 since the beat remains constant at 100. Also, avoid slowing down before the cut time. In both instances the note values are extended to give the illusion of a ritardando. At measure 73 "Skip To My Lou" is first stated by the trumpets, then echoed by the upper woodwinds. There may be a tendency to get both louder and faster at measure 87, but keep the tempo steady at all times. The bass line remains constant (F-C), although the chords above change from F to E flat. Some young players may think they have the wrong notes, but this ostinato pattern is indeed correct. If the nine stroke snare drum roll has not yet been learned, substitute four sixteenth notes. When this is secure, rebounds may be added. The cymbal crashes provide color and excitement to the third song and should sound convincing and not muffled. Composer(s): This piece was composed by Anne McGinty. Publisher: This piece was published by Boosey & Hawkes.
