An American Celebration
In his life, Melvin Shelton has observed the incredible spirit of the American people in times of national stress. At times it may seem to others that this amazing strength somehow goes into remission as we seek our own personal pleasures, however when this "sleeping giant" is awakened, it has always been a tower of strength. "American Celebration" is Melvin Shelton's attempt to put these thoughts into sound. Estimated Performance Time: 8:27 Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and is for vibes, chimes and tom toms. The timpani part is written for 4 timpani, pitched in A, C, D and F. The 1st percussion part is for claves, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, snare drum, bass drum and tam tam. The 2nd percussion part is for triangle, wind chimes, bells, chimes and xylophone. Note to the Conductor: The first 22 measures are in essence a crescendo building to the "Passionato" flowing melody in measure 23. From this point on the conductor should make every effort to bring out the mixture of tone colors and textures as the themes and accompanying figures are passed from one instrument to another. In measures 2 and 3, the conductor will need to divide all men's voices evenly between the 3-note cluster. All pitches are cued in the various parts in concert pitch. Starting pitch can be taken from the bass note and matching the pitches of the trombones. Measures 6, 7 and 8 should be treated likewise with the 3-note cluster in the women's voices, and matching the pitches of the F Horns. The ostinato rhythmic figures beginning at measure 71 through the end of the piece should be detached and well articulated. The crescendo in the basses in measure 194 should be exaggerated and dramatic. Composer(s): This piece was composed by Melvin Shelton. Publisher: This piece was published by Curnow Music Press. Series: This piece is part of the series "Curnow National Heritage Series".
