The Governor's March
This striking yet very playable cut-time march is an excellent addition to the repertoire of classic American marches. Penned by the talented Leroy Anderson (you don't have to think hard to name a few of this other tunes!), we're sure you'll appreciate this newly-discovered gem. Estimated Performance Time: 2:30 Technical Notes: "The Governor's March" comes with a remarkable history. Originally titled "Governor Bradford March", it was written for orchestra in 1948. 50 years later (1998) Tom Everett, director of the Harvard University Band, discovered Mr. Anderson's manuscript for band among some other old band arrangements! This band version was performed for the first time in 1999 and the recording was used by National Public Radio. Leroy Anderson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1908, the son of Swedish immigrants. He started studying piano at an early age, first with his mother who was a church organist, and then at the New England Conservatory. When he entered Harvard College he joined the Harvard University Band as a trombonist; when he was a senior he became director of the band, a position he held until 1935 during his years in the graduate school. He made clever arrangements for the band, many still played by the band today, sixty years later. It was Leroy Anderson's band arrangements that brought him to the attention of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, the conductor and orchestra who premiered many of his original short orchestral pieces. Leroy Anderson wrote over forty memorable miniatures. With few exceptions, as soon as he had completed on of his pieces, he transcribed the piece for band. The percussion part is written for concert snare drum, concert bass drum, and crash cymbals. Composer(s): This piece was composed by Leroy Anderson. Publisher: This piece was published by Hal Leonard Corporation. Series: This piece is part of the series "Hal Leonard Concert Band Series".
