Profanation (From "Jeremiah, Symphony No. 1") - Concert Band
Item number 8897368CC, $104.95

Leonard Bernstein's fame is unparalleled in the history of American music. He was a pianist, a conductor, and composer. He is an icon in the fields of classical, popular, and Broadway music. This classic Bernstein piece, "Profanation", from "Jeremiah, Symphony No. 1" which was written in 1944, will be an important contribution to the music education of your students.

Estimated Performance Time: 7:00

Technical Notes: Trumpet 1 and 2 often duplicate cornet 2 and 3. Depending on instrumentation, this may or may not cause a balance problem. In a wind ensemble instrumentation eliminate trumpets 1 and 2 or cornet 2 and 3 when they are doubled. In a large symphonic band, you may need the doubling.

Counting rests and knowing whether the beat before the entrance is a duple or a triple subdivision present some of the most difficult problems in learning to perform this composition. The Profanation Rhythmic Analysis rectifies this problem. Permission is granted to duplicate the rhythmic analysis and to distribute it to all band members. Also, teaching the asymmetrical rhythms can be expedited by having the entire group play through the rhythmic analysis sheet in unison and repeating patterns as necessary to instill uniformity and confidence.

Mannin Veen
Mannin Veen (Dear Isle Of Man) - Concert Band
Item number 8897253CC, $121.95

This work, based on Manx folk-songs, is founded on four of these tunes. The first, "The Good Old Way", is an old and typical air written mostly in the Dorian mode. The major portion of this tune was probably added about 1882, following on the introduction on Primative Methodism into the Isle of Man.

The second tune, which introduces the lively section of the work, is a reel - "The Manx Fiddler". Chaloner, writing in the middle of the seventeenth century, remarked that the Manx people were 'much addicted to the music of the violyne, so that there is scarce a family in the Island, but more or less can play upon it; but as they are ill composers, so are they bad players.'

The third tune, "Sweet Water In The Common", relates to the old practice of summoning a jury of twenty-four men, comprised of three men from each of the parishes in the district where the dispute took place, to decide questions connected with watercourses, boundaries, etc.

The fourth and last tune is a fine old hymn, "The Harvest Of The Sea", sung by the fishermen as a song of thanksgiving after their safe return from the fishing grounds.
