Tocata/La Tumba De Alejandro Garcia Caturla
This is a captivating piece, written in four movements. The first movement, "Tocata", doesn't have a single note of music, and consists entirely of rhythmic foot-stomping and hand-clapping by the entire band. The three movements that follow range from a Peruvian-sounding flute motif in the second movement, to a swooping tango-like third movement, to the controlled chaos of the final movement - a hurricane of sound. Technical Notes: "Tocata" (the Spanish spelling of the familiar Italian word) is a fanfare based on the music of Caribbean people of African descent. Many traditional rhythms of the Santeria religion are incorporated in this piece. Although "tocata" is the word used in Spanish for "fanfare", it is also used here in the sense of its root meaning, "touch." This was originally the first movement of the suite "Islas Y Montanas (Islands and Mountains)", commissioned by the Minnesota Youth Symphonies, Manny and Claudette Laureano, co-directors. The band version is for Craig Kirchhoff and the University of Minnesota Bands. The 1st percussion part is marked for bongos, tam-tam, large suspended cymbal, shekere, floor tom, snare drum, and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for congas and suspended cymbals. The 3rd percussion part is marked for congas and bass drum. Many instruments are optional. Minimum instrumentation: flutes 1, 2, piccolo; oboe or E Flat clarinet; clarinets 1, 2, 3, bass clarinet; alto saxophones 1, 2, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone; 3 horns (omit horn 3); trumpets 1, 2, 3; trombones 1, 2, 3; euphonium; tuba; 4 percussion. If additional timpani are available, playing the high G an octave lower would be preferable. If only three timpani are available, omit the high G. Tuning of the congas drums and bongos: Congas and bongos are used to simulate the traditional Santeria bata drums. A bata ensemble has three drummers. Each bata drum has two different sized heads, so there are six drum heads in a bata ensemble. To simulate the bata sound, it is suggested that four congas - one large (tumba), two medium (segundo), one small (quinto) - and a set of bongos be used.
