Kennesaw Mountain Blues - Concert Band
Item number 8897091CC, $52.00

This piece has lots of drive and features down home blues harmony over a strong rock beat. The trumpets carry the melody at first, but before too long, the percussion section takes over for a solo break. Another feature is the mixed meter section where the whole band plays the blues scale in an uneven seven beats!

Estimated Performance Time: 3:35

Technical Notes: Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,884 acre National Park in Georgia that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. While walking some of the 17 miles of interpretive trails, one can still see historic earthworks, cannon emplacements and various interpretive signs. The nearby town of Kennesaw is home to the composer's in-laws.

The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and contains the bells and xylophone parts. The 1st percussion part contains the drum set part. The 2nd percussion part contains the tambourine part. The 3rd percussion part contains the woodblock, cowbell and triangle parts.

The music will come to life with a strong drum set player. Keep the tempo up and observe all articulations to keep the eighths on the short side. Accents will naturally fall on two and four in this style. Practice isolating the accompaniment figures at measure 13 (minus the trumpets) for rhythmic integrity. The solo section for percussion (at measure 46) will need to be steady so that the band can come together on the answering figures. The final two measure can be held out ad libitum on the fermatas.

Believe it or not, this Benny Goodman classic has never been available for standard big band instrumentation. The original contains solo clarinet and less than a full complement of brass. Arranger Mike Lewis has adapted this classic tune for 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a rhythm section. There is nothing new here, but now it is available for all standard big bands. This will be a welcome addition to any jazz library.
