Sonatine
"Sonatine" explores contrasts. At times it is quiet and lyrical, and at times bold. With the great variety of the contrasts between brass, woodwinds, and percussion, "Sonatine" is an excellent choice for your next festival or contest situation. Estimated Performance Time: 2:40 Technical Notes: The keyboard percussion part is labeled "mallet percussion", and is for bells. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for triangle, woodblock, and crash cymbals. Note to the conductor: Written for the "concert and contest" arena, there is ample opportunity for young bands to demonstrate contrasts in timbre, style, and dynamics in "Sonatine". Try to balance the clarinet section so that the slurred eighth note figure sounds like a continuous thread, unbroken at the "hand-offs." As much as possible, full value expression of the woodwind half notes from measures 27-34 is advised. The percussionists must be fully aware that they play a supporting role in this piece, and it is very easy to become overly dominant in the balance unless they use great control at all times.
