Without question, Holst's "The Planets" has risen to the top of the "charts" for symphonic works of this century. The unique style and musical drama have been emulated in many of today's music genres, from serious concert music to blockbuster movie scores. Mars is "the bringer of war" and its respective part of the suite, "Mars," was, ironically, composed just as World War I was beginning. "Mars" pounds out a driving rhythm which symbolizes a war, but contains a very emotional melody. This is the perfect piece for any formal concert.
